Two years after the murder of his son and of repeatedly marching against violence, Mexican activist Javier Sicilia considers the use of weapons in self-defense to be both legitimate and "most worthy."

"It seems to me most worthy that someone might take a pistol in order to say: 'You are not going to diminish my dignity or the dignity of a community'," Sicilia said during an interview with EFE.

The poet said that "any defense is legitimate," "under a principle of dignity," when the State does not provide security and justice to its citizens.

The statements of the founder of the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity (MPJD), which last year toured several cities in Mexico and the United States to call for a halt to the violence, come at the end of a year in which self-defense groups have appeared in different regions of Mexico.
