A group of senators have proposed a legal reform to allow marriage between same-sex couples throughout Mexico. Currently, same-sex unions are only being contemplated in the legislation of Mexico City and, in a way, in Colima and Jalisco.
The proposal would reform the Federal Civil Code to establish marriage as “the free union of two people”, not only that between a man and a woman.
Senator Fernando Mayans, from the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), unveiled the initiative to his parliamentary group on Thursday. The leftist legislator’s personnel confirmed that the proposal will be presented to the Cabinet next Wednesday so they can take the opportunity to analyze it in committees.
The proposal shows that local congresses will have to provide their area with adequate legislation, with the goal of “regulating the institution of marriage based on principles, human rights and individual guarantees provided by the Constitution.”
