MEXICO CITY - In the third quarter of 2013, the number of jobless in Mexico reached 2.7 million, for an unemployment rate of 5.2 percent, according to official figures.

The figure exceeds that for a similar period in 2012, when the unemployment rate was 5.1 percent, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

There was also an increase in unemployment compared to two previous quarters (five percent in January-March and 4.9 percent in April-June).

The report says that unemployment levels in the July-September period of this year were the highest since the second quarter of 2011, when they reached 5.23 percent.

The Inegi National Survey on Occupation and Employment found that all modes of informal employment accounted for 29.30 million people, or 59.1 percent of working people.
