The Cali Baja Bi-National Mega-Region is a globally unique bi-national location for business investments. CaliBaja encompasses the entire California - Baja, Mexico border region that includes San Diego County, Imperial County and Baja California in Mexico. (Cali Baja)

As the U.S. and Mexican governments launch a new initiative to build stronger business ties across the border, they are looking at San Diego's CaliBaja Binational Mega-Region as a model for finding ways that industrial clusters and supply chains in both countries can work closer together.

In particular, government officials from both countries are examining a mapping system that CaliBaja created to identify and track industrial clusters in San Diego and Imperial counties and Baja California.

At the North American Competitiveness and Innovation Conference in San Diego this week, International Trade Administration official Colleen Fisher said that mapping clusters of industries could help drive economic growth by charting the geographic concentration of manufacturers in a particular industry, as well as suppliers, service providers and educational institutions with ties to the industry.

"The ultimate goal is to create economic development and jobs throughout both countries," Fisher said.

Under a new program launched in September, the U.S. and Mexican governments are trying to create industrial maps of the border zone, based on pilot programs in the Monterrey-Saltillo industrial corridor in Mexico as well as CaliBaja's "asset maps," found at www.calibaja.net.
