Human rights and freedom of press organizations have urged the Mexican government to conduct thorough investigations and serve justice for journalists beaten by police, Press TV reports.
“The report we delivered this morning documents that 46 journalists were attacked on October 2. Of those, 70 percent were attacked by policemen, but there were also arbitrary arrests. At least three journalists were arbitrarily arrested,” Antonio Martinez Velazquez, the spokesperson for NGO Article XIX, said on Monday, while describing a violent protest in Mexico City.
During the protest, police targeted and attacked journalists who were documenting a march to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Tlatelolco student massacre in 1968.
Fresh statistics revealed that Mexican police and soldiers have perpetrated over half of the attacks on members of the press, with 90 percent of cases going unsolved and 75 journalists being murdered since 2000.
According to the Switzerland-based Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), journalists are more at risk in Mexico where they are hunted by organized crime and suffer the highest death toll.
