TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Chiapas - Enoch Díaz Pérez, mayor of Pueblo Nuevo Solistahuacan, in Chiapas, sent 14 children to jail in the county seat because the children were celebrating the Day of the Dead and asking for "calaverita" (little candy skulls).

After being arrested, the children were jailed on the municipal jail, which outraged their parents, who went to the city hall to have them freed. However, they were received with gunfire which the municipal police fired into the air.

According to the statements of the parents, Díaz Pérez was opposed to keeping the tradition of the All Saints celebration.

On November 1 in Mexico, All Souls is celebrated, and in Chiapas and other Mexican states, thousands of children come out and ask for "calaverita" house by house.

The All Souls celebration is a tradition in the indigenous communities. Thousands go to cemeteries to decorate the graves and remember their loved ones who have passed on.
