Mexico has a huge problem with internally displaced persons, particularly in Michoacán’s Tierra Caliente region, according to National Population Council (Coespo) President Clara Ochoa Valdés.

No studies have been conducted and no figures currently exist regarding the number of Mexicans who have needed to leave their homes because of crime and violence, but she recognized that it is currently a widespread phenomenon.

Ochoa Valdés said that there is no government agency in charge of distinguishing migration that is derived from violence and insecurity from migration caused by lack of economic opportunities. She added that the only source of information on Mexico’s internally displaced persons is from media reports, and that the problem has become visible through the appearance of vigilante groups in Michoacán’s indigenous communities.

... This exodus, Ochoa Valdés said, requires people to search for members of their extended family who live in other geographic locations who would be able to provide them with temporary shelter until the situation in their home community improves.
