The commercial planting of transgenic corn in Mexico has been halted. This is true at least on a temporary basis as a result of a measure ordered by a Mexican court, but the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and biotechnology companies continue the discussion from their respective trenches.
On August 12, 2013, the organization AgroBIO, which counts among its members such companies as Bayer, Dow AgroSciences, Monsanto, Pioneer and Syngenta, launched the campaign 'The Truth of Your Planet' to talk about genetically modified seeds and convince the public about the benefits of obtaining approval for commercial plantings.
"We are prepared for it to be a long campaign," says Alejandro Monteagudo, General Director of Mexico AgroBIO.
Monteagudo explains that in 1996-2012, a period that includes the planting of genetically-modified corn [GM corn], economic benefits totalling 9.8 million dollars [USD] derived from the increase in grain production and savings for farmers.
But organizations like the Union of Scientists Committed to Society (UCCS), Collectives A.C. and the Seeds of Life Foundation [Fundación Semillas de Vida] have offered a new twist in the debate over the fate of GM corn in Mexico.
