Drug trafficking and violence have contributed to a loss of support for democracy in Mexico over the past seven years, according to a survey by Latinobarómetro (Latino Barometer) released last week.
After 12 years of PAN (National Action Party) government, the political change of power Mexico experienced was not because the country was looking for political solution, but rather the population sought a solution to other problems affecting it.
"The return of the PRI (Institutional Revolution Party) after just two [PAN, National Action Party] governments is symptomatic of the search for a solution, not to political problems, but rather to Mexican society and violence," said the report.
The country has had a steady decline in support for democracy, which dropped from 63 percent in 2002 to 40 percent in 2011.
... In the past year, support for democracy showed a steady decline, going to 37 percent this year. The report explains that "violence and drug trafficking are an important part of the explanation."
