Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretary José Antonio Meade defended Mexico’s human rights record at the United Nations Wednesday, touting reforms but admitting that great challenges remain.

“Levels of violence have decreased and the National Human Rights Commission has received considerably fewer complaints against members of the armed forces,” Meade said, without giving any figures. Last year, Mexico enacted a law to provide crime victims with restorative justice — including reparations — and a law protecting journalists and rights defenders, he said.

“The attention provided to victims of crime and of human rights violations is proof of the new approach through which Mexico is addressing the problem,” Meade said.

Mexican Human Rights Undersecretary Lía Limón added that the country’s Human Rights Program was on track to tackle its challenges. “I’m sure that the Human Rights Program … is on the right track to work hand in hand with different institutions,” Limón said. “We have to keep working on the implementation of the (human rights) law.”
