MEXICO CITY - St. Petersburg-based Mariinsky Ballet company on Thursday begins its first tour in Mexico in the past decade attracting thousands of local ballet aficionados to sold-out performances.
“It is the fourth time that we arrive here, and I believe we have many friends in Mexico,” director of the Mariinsky Ballet Yuri Fateyev told a news conference in Mexico City on Wednesday.
Fateyev said the travelling troupe comprised 130 dancers and support personnel, including some promising young talents.
The program of the tour includes performances of Le Corsaire and Mikhail Fokine's ballets Chopiniana, Petrushka and Scheherazade.
The Mariinsky previous tours in Mexico in 2001-2003 were a huge success and drew an audience of over 115,000 people, according to organizers.
