A record number of undocumented illegal immigrants were deported from the United States last year. Most of the 410 thousand migrants were Mexican. And many ended up in places like Tijuana on Mexico's border with the US. As Adam Raney reports, some are living in tunnels, hoping to return to families they left behind. (AlJazeeraEnglish)

BAJA CALIFORNIA - It is estimated that between 700 and 1000 people, most of them originally from Baja California, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Michoacán and Guerrero, live in the Tijuana River channel, revealed a study prepared by Laura Velasco Ortiz, an investigator from the Department of Cultural Studies of the Northern Frontier College (Colef).

Some 96% of these inhabitants are men, additionally 70% do not have an identification document, which makes them the objects of at least two arrests by the municipal police every 15 days.

42.6% have been living in the channel less than one month, and only 17.7% have between four and six months there. 38.4% want to return to the United States and 26.4% want to remain in Tijuana.

In order to perform the study, there were six tours of the two kilometers that comprise "El Bordo" (the riverbank), to count homes and the number of inhabitants per home. There were three tours of areas where people slept.
