Mexico which has been recently battered by two hurricanes, is one of the most affected countries because of climate change, said Juan José Guerra, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources.
The official explained that the country has more that 11,200 km of coastline, which makes it vulnerable to damage caused by hurricanes, journal Vanguardia reported today.
Hurricanes Manuel, in the Pacific Ocean, and Ingrid, in the Atlantic, recently hit Mexico, simultaneously, with devastating rains.
Paradoxically, northern Mexico has been suffering for the last years one of the worst droughts in its history.
Guerra also made reference to the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the country's urgent commitment in this sense.
Mario Molina, Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1995, affirmed that Mexico must prepare for the impact of meteorological phenomena, increasingly extreme and frequent, because of the climate change, the digital site Vértigo Político posted.
A report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change confirmed that extreme events like hurricanes, droughts, heat waves, heavy rains and increasing sea level, will not only continue but also will be more frequent in the next 100 years.
Taking into account this situation, the Mexican government called upon the UN General Assembly to discuss deeply climate change issues.
