Ricardo Bucio, president of the National Council Against Discrimination (Conapred), expressed his fears over the view of discrimination against women as a fact of life in all spheres of public and private life in Mexico. This view continues, even when it means violence, workplace discrimination and lack of access to political power.
In an interview with La Jornada, he called the acceptance of femicide and gender discrimination ‘dangerous’, and referred to the fact that Mexicans between ages 14 and 17 are the most likely to try to justify violence against women (according to the National Survey on Discrimination in Mexico) as ‘alarming’.
“Gender-based violence has become more common here in recent years. I feel it is dangerous that we have become accustomed to femicide; we have to take measures against this acceptance.”
Bucio admitted that femicide is the result of inaction from the authorities, who give little importance to these issues anyway. This was a reference to the call by feminist activists and human rights defenders in the southeast of the country to declare a Citizen’s Gender Alert System in the face of the failure of local and federal authorities to respond in an acceptable, preventative manner for the eradication of femicide.
