The number of smuggled cars has quadrupled since the beginning of Baja California Gov. José Guadalupe Osuna Millán’s administration, the National Chamber of Commerce’s Auto Specialist Group reported on Tuesday.

At the beginning of the Osuna Millán administration in 2007, there were an estimated 100,000 cars in Baja California that had been smuggled in from abroad, which the Auto Specialist Group now estimates at 400,000 and rising.

Auto Specialist Group President Gilberto Leyva Camacho places the blame for the increase of smuggled cars on the federal government and its centralizing policies.

“Since the import duties for foreign cars were increased, we see fewer and fewer cars in this city that have been imported legally, because sometimes the (import) cost is higher than the cost of the car itself,” Leyva Camacho said.
