As part of his agenda during the general debate of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade participated as a speaker last week at the release of the declaration of commitment to end sexual violence in conflict.

Foreign Secretary Meade noted that, for Mexico, sexual violence is a crime against humanity, and the commitment of the international community is needed to prevent and punish this conduct. Therefore, Mexico is participating as a regional leader of this initiative.

On behalf of Mexico, the Foreign Secretary welcomed the British government's initiative on working together to create an International Protocol on the Investigation and Documentation of Sexual Violence in Conflict Situations.

The initiative seeks to create a legal tool to prevent impunity for this type of crime, which significantly aggravates armed conflicts and impedes the restoration of international peace and security.

Foreign Secretary Meade stated that Mexico has demonstrated its commitment to protecting civilians in armed conflicts. In addition to being a Party to the relevant treaties, such as the recently adopted Arms Trade Treaty -- whose instrument of ratification will be deposited by the Foreign Secretary in the UN on Wednesday afternoon -- during its most recent term on the Security Council (2009-2010), Mexico actively contributed to broadening protection for children in armed conflicts.

The Mexican Foreign Secretary also stressed Mexico's commitment to promoting the role of women in peace processes to repair the social fabric in countries affected by armed conflict.
