A new resort and spa in Cancun has taken a different approach in its design, landscaping, meal options and marketing, setting it apart from other properties up and down the Mayan coast. Even the location of Nizuc Resort & Spa in Punta Nizuc is off the grid.

Located on one of the Riviera Maya's most secluded enclaves, Punta Nizuc is an area once sacred to the ancient Mayans who gathered there to worship and pray.

The word Nizuc means "nose of the dog," and it describes the shape of the peninsula where the land meets the ocean, flanked by two beaches with a view of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef in the world.

... The 274-suite resort, which opened in April, posed a challenge to the architect and interior designer Alejandro Escudero, according to Maria Elena Armenta, director of sales.
