Carlos Noriega, Chief Executive Officer of the Mexican Association of Administrators of Retirement Funds, said that according to the third annual survey ”Saving for the Future,” 41% of México’s population that is over 65 years of age are still working and 25% over the age of 80 are still working. 28% of México’s senior citizens are dependent upon their children, and 17% said they felt lonely and abandonned.
He noted that only 2 out of 10 senior citizens made plans for their retirement years while working and only half felt like they could meet their daily financial requirements.
Of the 2,000 senior citizens included in the survey Carlos Noriega said that 95% said that whatever they have they accumulated from working, the remainder said what they have was the result of savings and good management of their income.
Carlos Noriega said that although the younger generation has more schooling than the senior citizens, “studies reveal that short-term thinking and lack of foresight is still a part of the culture of the Mexicans, since the vast majority does not have a retirement savings account.”
The CEO said, “As a society, we face enormous challenges in providing better living conditions to those who are retired, and providing more opportunities for young people to have a better future.”
