The president's tax reform has put the agriculture and food industry at a disadvantage, going against the National Crusade Against Hunger.
"We are not opposed to paying taxes, but the authorities should look for alternatives which do not hinder food production," said Benjamín Grayeb, president of the National Agriculture Council (CNA).
He insisted that increasing producers' income tax - which is currently 30 percent - and the elimination of the flax tax and administrative help "will affect the sector and goes against the recommendations of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE) for supporting the agricultural sector. The proposal puts us at a disadvantage with the country's business partners."
