MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto called on Mexican citizens to continue donating to the survivors of hurricane Ingrid and tropical storm Manuel, saying that “the emergency isn’t over.”
After touring the donation center in Mexico City’s central Zócalo square with First Lady Angélica Rivera and Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, Peña Nieto discussed how donations are handled and distributed with members of the press.
According to Peña Nieto, volunteers in Mexico City’s Zócalo — one of 1,172 donation centers around the country — have already received 562 tons of goods, double the amount of aid received in other donation centers. Peña Nieto went on to thank volunteers at the donation center for their altruistic commitment and sense of solidarity with survivors of the storms.
Local authorities in the affected states are ensuring that these goods, which include milk, tuna, cooking oil and cleaning products, are being delivered directly to the people who need it most, Peña Nieto said.
