The world’s biggest Coca-Cola bottler, not content with running Mexico’s leading chain of convenience stores and pharmacies, has announced plans to add yet another new business to its stable: fast-food restaurants.
Fomento Económico Mexicano (Femsa) on Monday said it planned to acquire an 80 per cent stake in Gorditas Doña Tota, a well known restaurant chain in northern Mexico.
Femsa, the largest publicly-traded Coca-Cola bottling company in the world, owns Oxxo, a chain of 11,000 convenience stores across Mexico. It made the move into the pharmacy business this year by acquiring Farmacias Yza, one of the leading pharmacy chains in southeastern Mexico and Farmacias FM Moderna – which together have nearly 450 outlets.
The deal to acquire a controlling stake in Doña Tota is being done via Femsa’s retail subsidiary, FEMSA Comercio. The company didn’t disclose financial details of the transaction.
