Yucatán Gender Equality Institute Director Rosario Cetina Amaya said this week that more and more women in Yucatán are seeking support and justice when they are abused, especially physically and economically.
Speaking at the inauguration of a domestic violence shelter in Mérida, Cetina Amaya said that 4,500 domestic violence complaints have been received in Yucatán so far this year, adding that 2,500 of these women are currently in the process of improving their situation.
These women, she said, have received psychological and legal support and are also being helped to obtain their own assets. Cetina Amaya said that the latter is important as “their husbands, sons and brothers often have a house in their own name, but a woman almost never.”
She went on to say that it’s not enough to merely identify domestic violence as a social problem, but that steps also need to be taken to remedy the problem.
