The Mexican government takes great satisfaction from affirming the bonds of friendship and cooperation between our nations, and from strengthening our relationship with our sister country of Cuba, as President Enrique Peña Nieto said in January while meeting with Cuban President Raúl Castro.
Mexico and Cuba have a historic friendship, which emerged from a shared desire for independence and which over time has led to solidarity and mutual understanding during defining moments for our peoples. In a manner consistent with the principles of respect for self-determination and the sovereignty of nations, Mexico has stood against the unilateral embargo to which Cuba has been subjected.
Both countries have contributed to the growth of various cultural movements in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through their literature, music, painting and poetry, among other artistic means of expression, Mexico and Cuba have remained in constant dialogue. This same approach has been important in the area of educational cooperation.
From the start of his administration, President Enrique Peña Nieto has made it a specific priority to strengthen ties within our region, Latin America and the Caribbean.
