MEXICO CITY — Mexico carried out rescue and cleanup efforts Tuesday in the wake of two cyclones that hit both coasts over the weekend, causing widespread flooding and landslides and killing several dozen people.
Tropical storm Manuel brought torrential rain to Pacific coast states, while on the Gulf coast, Hurricane Ingrid made landfall Monday before dissipating as it moved inland.
The Interior Ministry's emergency-services department said that 35 people had been confirmed killed as of late Monday, including 15 people in southern Guerrero state on the Pacific coast, 12 in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, and others in Michoacan, Puebla, Hidalgo and Oaxaca.
Authorities estimated that at least 1.2 million people were affected by the rain in nine states. Collections of food and other supplies were being made for distribution in the worst affected areas.
Some of the worst damage was caused in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero and its principal tourist resort Acapulco. Thousands of tourists remained stranded Tuesday after the port was cut off with the airport closed by flooding and highways out of the city blocked by mudslides and other damage.
