Cindy McCain and former first lady of Mexico Marta Sahagun de Fox discussed the issue of human trafficking Thursday, agreeing that it is among the most pressing concerns facing both nations.
Peoria Vice Mayor Tony Rivero, whose United Peoria Foundation organized the event along with the McCain Institute for International Leadership, set the stage in his opening remarks in the Peoria Public Safety Administration Building.
“Human trafficking is an ugly sore which we tend to view as something that does not touch us directly,” he said. “And is therefore something that does not demand immediate attention.”
Sahagun said the first step to finding a solution to human trafficking is acknowledging its existence. Human trafficking thrives, she said, in part because good people do not want to think about it.
