Cancun is America's Bali. It's loud and brash and party-central. But under all those stomping feet is the spectacular silence and epic grandeur of the pristine Yucatan Aquifer, described by some as the world's largest underground river - and environmentalists are deeply concerned about it's future.
While Yucatán is known for its large water deposits and will likely never face shortages, experts say that the lack of appropriate conservation schemes could cause much of its water supply to become unusable due their high degree of pollution.
Celia Navarrete González, the coordinator of the “Water Challenges and Solutions” conference that will be held in Mérida this October, said that the threat of water pollution requires the consolidation of alliances between different government agencies and the private sector to find solutions to Yucatán’s water problems.
The National Water Commission (Conagua) is currently conducting a study to determine the water quality in Yucatán’s aquifers, especially those that supply Mérida, which has the highest population density in the state. Navarrete González said that while no one expects the aquifer to dry up, it’s not currently known if it can renew itself with clean water efficiently enough to remain suitable for human use.
