TIJUANA, Baja California - Immigration is a bilateral subject that both countries are addressing upon recognizing the impact which deportations from the United States have on Tijuana, said Andrew S. E. Erickson, Consul General of the United States in Tijuana.

He explained that deportations are not nice, but must be done, and always with the coordination of both nations. He said that this week there will be a meeting, without providing details on the participants.

"It is a thorny issue for everybody, on both sides of the border, but the reality is that when we deport Mexican citizens from my country, who are not citizens of my country, I think it is normal to do so under an agreement," he said.

He insisted they are aware of the problems generated by the deportations in Tijuana, and are trying to reduce them.

"It is unpleasant, but we have to do it. People who do not deserve to be in my county, and who are deported for various reasons, have a home and that home is called Mexico," he said.
