According to a paper by Mark Mills, the CEO of Digital Power Group, when all the technology involved is factored in, an iPhone uses more energy than a midsize refrigerator.
An Environmental Protection Agency star rated midsize fridge uses approximately 322 kilowatt hours per year, while an iPhone burns an estimated 361 kilowatt hours of energy annually.
Mills factored in the energy usage of data transmissions and wifi connections along with cloud storage facilities, and giant server farms, all of which consume an increasing amount of energy to provide functionality to smartphones, rather than just the phone itself.
Time reports that the digital economy is using approximately 10 percent of the world's electricity.
Also known as the Information Communication Technology or ICT, this huge network of electronics uses an estimated 15 hundred terawatt hours of power each year, especially enormous computer server farms providing data storage in the cloud.
One reason for this enormous amount of energy usage is that the ICT is never turned off, and functions around the clock, requiring a lot of energy 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
