Runners Raul Pacheco and Gladys Tejeda made all Peruvians proud this weekend by winning their respective categories Sunday at the Mexico City Marathon, which takes place every year in the Aztec capital.
Pacheco and Tejeda entered Mexico’s Olympic Stadium leading the group of approximately 20 thousand competitors, including some top runners from Kenya.
It’s important to note that since 2002 African runners have absolutely owned the Mexico City Marathon, with the exception coming in 2009 when Mexican Edilberto Mendez stood atop the podium in the men’s category.
Tejeda crossed the finish line with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes 34 seconds, ahead of athletes from Kenya, Demise Misker Mekonen (2:40:56) and Ogla Jerono Kimaiyo (2:41:23).
After the competition Tejeda, originally from the Huancayo region, expressed her dedication to the competition.
“Everything can be achieved with effort,” said Tejeda. “I have confidence and that’s why I am here.”
For his part, the Peruvian men’s champion, Pacheco, arrived with a comfortable lead after two hours, 16 minutes and 56 seconds, and pocketed approximately $34,690.
