Mayan Ruins of Tulum Mexico (Linhdda)

Chichen Itza is a World Wonder and the second most important archeological site in the country, however the archeological site is facing a major financial crisis.

Hotel occupancy reached only 18% during the summer holiday period.

The three factors identified by the hotelier in the zone that explain the collapse of tourism are: the shutting down of the sound and light show, a lack of logistics and organization, an large amount of vendors that harass visitors, and the lack of accessibility.

These problems are not new, highlighted the hoteliers, data from the Ministry of Tourism shows that in 2012 the visits of foreign tourists fell by 12.39%, and could only be compensated by the arrival of domestic tourists which increased by 17%.

On the other hand in 2012, the archeological site of Tulum in Quintana Roo, for the second consecutive year overtook Chichen Itza as a favorite destination for foreigners. Tulum received 674,064 visitors while Chichen Itza received 654,415 persons.
