The fact that most of the murders, disappearances and detentions of activists have to do with issues of environmental protection proves that both the State and businesses are willing to implement a “policy of terror” in order to continue stripping communities of their natural resources, declared members of civic organizations.
Listed among the attacks against environmentalists which aroused greater interest- and even merited sentences by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights- is that of farmer ecologists Teodoro Cabrera and Rodolfo Montiel, who were tortured and jailed in 1999 by members of the army.
However, it may also be worth mentioning the cases of Eva Alarcón and Marcial Bautista, who went missing in December of 2011, and more recently the homicide of Noé Vazquéz Ortiz, which just happened this past August 2.
In the same way, a report from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights revealed that from 2006 to 2009 at least 11 environmentalists were killed, among them Aldo Zamora, champion of forests in the state of Mexico, and María Edy Fabiola Osorio, opponent of the construction of a bridge in Acapulco.
