MEXICO CITY – Andrés Manuel López Obrador, polemic leader of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), was accused by an Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) deputy this week of polarizing Mexican society, after he criticized President Enrique Peña Nieto’s energy reform proposal.

López Obrador, who narrowly missed out on winning the presidency in the last two national elections and is known for his broad support base among Mexico’s poor communities, has repeatedly attacked Peña Nieto’s proposal, claiming the PRI president is trying to privatize what is currently a state-run oil industry.

Peña Nieto has proposed to allow profit-sharing agreements with foreign companies, which would require a change to Article 27 of the Mexican Constitution, which protects Mexico’s hydrocarbon reserves. Peña Nieto has fervently denied this would amount to privatization.

PRI Deputy Emilse Miranda Munive said on Thursday that López Obrador is deliberately trying to divide Mexican opinion for political gain. Miranda, however, stressed her respect for López Obrador’s right to freedom of speech.
