Cuauhtemoc Cardenas believes that it is not required to modify the constitution to reform PEMEX. (Cuartoscuro)
The government’s use of Lázaro Cárdenas to justify and propel before the people of Mexico their unpatriotic and sell-out proposal for energy reform seems deceitful and offensive.
The principal fight of Lázaro Cardenas was to rescue and fully exercise the country’s sovereignty in its independent development. Such was the background objective of the expropriation of oil companies on March 18, 1938 and of his firm opposition, later, to the awarding of venture contracts. The current official initiative goes precisely in the opposite direction.
Obviously, the reform proposal of Article 27 of the Constitution that President Peña Nieto presented to Congress recoups the text of that article, which was reformed during the Cárdenas administration following the expropriation. Here begins the ample deployment of official propaganda attempting to make the public believe that the proposal corresponds to the ideology and the fights that Lázaro Cárdenas maintained in favor of Mexico and its people.
