The non-governmental organization SMART (Mexican Society for Responsible Consumption) petitioned the Federal Judiciary for an order of protection to be able to grow, transport, and consume marijuana.
In its petition, SMART argued the unconstitutionality of laws that prohibit the sale and cultivation of the plant.
In a press conference, Andrés Aguinaco Gómez Mont, president of the Strategic Center for Social Impact (CEIS) declared that to outlaw marijuana is a violation of human rights.
He pointed out that SMART is the first citizen organization for responsible and tolerant personal consumption of marijuana whose objective is to defend the human right to freedom of choice. He said that the petition, introduced on July 5, was created to bring about respect and protection of the basic human rights of self-determination of individuals and the freedom of choice.
