The National Council for the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) promised that the party will stay in the Pact for Mexico and declared that it would “modernize Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) without privatizing [the company] through a significant reform” that will not involve constitutional changes.
Other agreements made by the Council included promoting a national consultation on energy matters and carrying out a binding plebiscite that will allow the Mexican people to decide the fates of oil and electricity in the country.
The resolution was voted on after more than ten hours of tense negotiations between the directors of the various party factions. In the end, in order to avoid a fracture, the dominant group, the New Left (NI), decided to change the text that had already been prepared so that the Council would clearly back the participation of the PRD in the Pact for Mexico.
