The title deed of the sacred place of Haramara, deemed national territory by the SEDATU (Spanish initials Secretariat of Agrarian and Urban Development), will be in the name of the Wixárica Union.
The Wixaritari (in the singular: wixárika) or Huichols are one of the four indigenous groups that inhabit the states of Durango, Jalisco and Nayarit. The 2010 Census states that the Wixárika people number 58,820 people.
The main places of worship for the wixaritaris are five sacred spots corresponding to the five cardinal points. One of them is Tatei Haramara, the mother of corn and of the five colors.
To the west is the sacred door leading to the fifth world that is made up by two white stones (Tatei Waxieve and Tatei Yukawima) located on The Island of the King (Isla del Rey) near the port of San Blas in Nayarit.
A Haramara is the place where Wixaritaris go to give thanks and to pray for fertile land.
Given that matters of culture are considered inalienable, the recognition and protection of the sacred places of the Wixárika people is a national public policy created for the advancement of the rights of indigenous people.
