An international contemporary art exhibit is scheduled to kick off this week in the central Mexican state of Queretaro, providing “a space for reflection and debate on one of the issues that most afflicts present-day society: violence and the different ways it is concealed,” a federal government cultural agency said.
Twenty-seven artists will present their works from Aug. 16 through Nov. 15 during the exhibition, titled “Visible Invisibilization: Approaches to the Subject of Violence,” the National Council for Culture and Arts said in a statement Thursday.
The artists will strive to make violence visible through the use of objects, actions, performances, installations, interventions in public spaces and audiovisual recordings, which were created expressly for this exhibit, the institution said.
“How can cultural practices respond to the normalization of violence?” visual artist Cesar Martinez, who is participating in the exhibit, asked rhetorically. “Art is our trench.”
