Of the economically active population in Mexico, 40 percent incur absenteeism because of problems related to alcohol and many workers are absent on Mondays, as intake on weekends is "explosive", said the director of the Youth Integration Centers, Carmen Fernandez Caceres.
While arguing that no regulations should be relaxed to allow legal use of marijuana, as she consideres it a lie that this would reduce violence, she said that 70 percent of the Mexican population consume alcoholic beverages. Of that percentage, she said, 26 million people do so under risky conditions and nearly 5 million are alcohol dependent.
In the opening ceremony of the intensive days for prevention with the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC), Fernandez Caceres stated that between 60 and 70 percent of industrial accidents, including fights, occur when the employee is under the influence of alcoholic beverages. In the country, she added, the number of accidents caused by drinking amounts to 17,000 among young people and 30,000 in the general population.
