Human rights organizations have denounced the use of police dogs by the United States Border Patrol in arresting undocumented immigrants.

Margarito Grajeda López, the regional coordinator of the Comité Pro Derechos Humanos (Human Rights Committee) in Reynosa, Tamaulipas said that, in addition to separating detained immigrants from their families and preventing them from contacting the Mexican consulate in McAllen, Texas, the U.S. Border Patrol has increased violations of human rights by using dogs to attack immigrants. She said she received a report from a Mexican immigrant who crossed the border illegally but was discovered by Border Patrol agents, who were accompanied by police dogs, and arrested.

The immigrant, who wished to remain anonymous to protect his identity, said that he tried to escape but was pursued by the dogs. Grajeda López said that the immigrant was attacked and bitten on his legs and ankles, while his traveling companions were beaten by the Border Patrol agents. He needed 29 stitches for the wounds he received from the dog attack.
