Authorities opened a call center in January 2013 in Mexico City to respond to anonymous and confidential reports of human trafficking.

“We offer psychological and legal counseling to victims or witnesses of human trafficking so that they feel safe and receive proper care,” said Ruth Delgadillo Martínez, the director of Psychology at the Citizens’ Council for Public Security and the Procurement of Justice of Mexico City who is in charge of the call center.

From January to mid-July 2013, the call center received 31 reports that have been channeled to the PGJDF’s Special Prosecutor Office for Human Trafficking.

“The single, primary objective of [the Special Prosecutor’s Office] is to combat human trafficking in all its forms including sexual exploitation, labor exploitation, slavery and trafficking in human organs and tissues,” said Juana Camila Bautista, the head of the Special Prosecutor Office for Human Trafficking.

A total of 343 human-trafficking victims were freed in 220 operations in Mexico City from 2008 to 2013, leading to the dismantling of 18 gangs and 32 convictions resulting in prison sentences, according to the PGJDF.
