A U.S. court on Thursday sentenced a queen of Mexican drug lord, Sandra Avila Beltran, also known as “Queen of the Pacific” to 70 months of imprisonment.
The court initially accused Beltran of trafficking cocaine by creating routes from the Pacific Coast to California, prosecutors said. However, a deal would prosecute her for lesser charge.
U.S. federal judge Michael Moore, in his verdict in Miami, charged her for assisting her former lover and one of the leaders of her cartel, Colombian Juan Diego Espinosa, from evading justice.
In 2012, Mexico, where she spent five-year in jail for building up Mexico’s most powerful criminal body, Sinaloa Cartel, extradited her to the U.S.
She is likely to free as early as next week after already serving more than five years in prison.
“It is 70 months counting from 28 September 2007, when she was arrested in Mexico, therefore she could be set free on the next weekend,” defense lawyer Stephen Ralls told reporters.
The lawyers expect her immediate deportation to Mexico as soon as she gets released from jail.
