As part of a pilot project aimed at combating crime, children and teenagers from 100 Mexican towns will have access to artistic and cultural activities in which to invest their free time. This includes those areas in which 40% of the country’s crime index is concentrated.

The pilot project “Summer of Social Transformation” will initially be implemented in Tijuana (Baja California), Ciudad Juárez (Chihuahua), Xalapa (Veracruz), Ecatepec and Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl (State of México), as well as in the Tepito area and in the district of Iztapalapa, in Mexico City.

The aim of the project is to “position culture as a tool of social transformation”. It was presented in Bellas Artes [a national institution for art and culture] on Wednesday, by Roberto Campa, the undersecretary for Prevention and Civic Participation of the Secretariat of Government Relations (SEGOB), and Rafael Tovar y Teresa, the president of the National Board for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA).
