Mexicans rely more on faith, magic and luck than on science. Half of the people claim that researchers are dangerous because of their knowledge, and they claim that scientific development gives rise to an "artificial and dehumanized" life. Many believe in psychic powers, and an overwhelming majority believes that cleansings, homeopathy and acupuncture are options for alleviating diseases that science does not recognize.

These are the results of the latest Survey on Public Perception of Science and Technology in Mexico 2011 (ENPECYT), developed by the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

Referring to these data, the CONACYT's general manager, Enrique Cabrero Mendoza, said that while the traditions, beliefs and spiritual life of peoples and individuals should be preserved, problems such as disease, environmental pollution and social conflict, among others, should be resolved based on scientific knowledge.
