MEXICO CITY – The federal government aims to get 1.1 million people back to work in 2013 through the National Employment Service, Labor Secretary Alfonso Navarrete Prida said on Thursday. Speaking at the Expo Empleo Yucatán 2013 in Mérida, Navarrete Prida said that so far this year the Labor Secretariat’s (STPS) employment scheme has found work for 680,000 people. A total of 50 million people are currently working in Mexico he said, of which 40 percent work in the formal sector and the other 60 percent work informally and therefore pay no income tax.
Navarrete Prida said that the informal sector was damaging Mexico’s development, as informal work means zero training, precarious employment, no social security and above all, low productivity and a lack of competitiveness. He added that President Enrique Peña Nieto has ordered state and municipal authorities, businessmen and social organizations to coordinate efforts to implement a national program that will move workers from the informal sector to formal jobs.
