Watch the video for “Chichon” (Dengue Dengue Dengue)

Backpacking through a foreign country, usually one in South America or Europe, is a rite of passage for many people in their 20s. These folks are easy to spot: non-locals in hiking boots, shorts and an enormous backpack large enough to carry a few weeks worth of clothing. Two of these travelers are the subject of Dengue Dengue Dengue’s latest video.

“Chichon” comes from the nu-cumbia production duo’s 2012 debut album “La Alianza Profana” (“The Profane Alliance”). The album is an 11-track collection of very dark and psychedelic techno-cumbia jams with “Chichon” easily being one of the darker ones. Their first single, “Simiolo,” was more of a light-hearted affair thanks to the space alien storyline and non-stop cowbell sounds.

The video for “Chichon,” however, is anything but fun and carefree. It features an enormous church procession in the middle of a large city, possibly the Dengue’s hometown of Lima. An enormous congregation of thousands of people fill up the city streets as banners and figures of Christ and La Virgen are raised.

The video becomes immediately darker when two young women, one in a green jacket and the other in a white chullo (Andean/Peruvean beanie with ear flaps), appear at the 00:47 mark.

Their appearance immediately changes the vibe of the religious gathering as the visuals in the video change the instant the woman in the green jacket bites into some of the local cuisine. Everything around her immediately radiates as a visual effect mimicking the effects of LSD pulsate around her and her partner. The “body of Christ” and other religious items glow in an unnatural light and, eventually, the women are separated from each other by a wall of military men and preachers who attempt to restrain the devout masses at the height of the celebration.

The LSD-like effects peak when the women are separated and only slightly dissipate as they spot each other on opposite sides of the crowd.

Were these women drugged while eating? Or is this simply a visual representation of travel-related anxieties?
