Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) - Myths and Truths (mercola)

MEXICO CITY – The Congressional Permanent Committee called upon the Economy Secretariat this week to modify the current food and beverage labeling laws, requiring companies to identify products containing Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Senator Verónica Martínez Espinoza, a sponsor of the proposal, said that, according to Greenpeace, more than 150 foods and drinks containing GMOs are sold in Mexico, but as they are not labeled, consumers are unaware which products contain GMOs.

Martínez Espinoza said that GMOs can be found in cereal, milk, baby food, beer, tortillas and eggs, among many other products. The use of GMOs is highly controversial. Proponents say that genetically modifying crops makes them more resistant to disease and drought.

Others say that their use reduces biodiversity, as farmers are encouraged to buy genetically identical seeds from a single source, which could make crops more vulnerable in the long term. “It’s the consumer’s job to decide whether or not to consume them,” Martínez Espinoza said.

“Consumers should therefore be given the largest amount of information possible to make effective decisions.”
