Hate crimes and other expressions of violence against sexually-diverse groups are rising at a worrying rate in Mexico without any corresponding action in response by the authorities whatsoever, according to Agenda LGBT. The Mexican group published their latest report on the status of homophobia in Mexico earlier this month.
The 17-page document was submitted on Wednesday to the National Commission on Human Rights (CNDH), and complements the group’s official complaint on April 8 of last year to CNDH director Raúl Plascencia Villanueva, in which Agenda LGBT declared that authorities had been neglectful in resolving the social subject of homophobia. In the report, Agenda LGBT offered a tally of the acts of violence that individuals of alternative sexual orientation still have to face, such as the absence of any legal status afforded to the marital union between people of the same sex, or the inability for these partners to have access to various social support services and functions.
Likewise, the group also warns that hate crimes are on the rise throughout the entire country, as evidenced by the murders of Quetzalcóatl Leija of Guerrero; Agnes Torres of Puebla; César Rivero and Felipe de Jesús Martínez of Mexico City; Sergio Altamirano of Chiapas; and even Javier Gómez Bastida, who took up the first prosecutorial post focused on groups of sexual diversity in Mexico City’s district attorney’s office.
