Miss World Pageant Enforces Bikini Ban (NewsyWorld)
The 2013 Miss World pageant is being held in the island of Bali in Jakarta, Indonesia. Because the Miss World pageant is being held in the most populous Islamic country in the world, the Miss World organization has agreed to enforce a bikini ban in the competition. The women will be sporting Bali’s traditional long sarongs, instead of Miss World’s traditional teeny bikini.
When Chairwoman of the Miss World Organization Julia Morley was asked about the Miss World bikini ban, she stated to Australia’s Herald Sun, “"I don't want to upset or get anyone in a situation where we are being disrespectful. We treasure respect for all the countries that take part in the pageant."
Responses from the people around the world have been controversial. Many believe it is good to respect the countries beliefs, values, and traditions. It is being held in their country after all. But others feel just the opposite, that the Miss World Organization should hold to their traditions and keep the bikinis.
