MEXICO CITY - The Mexican government hailed Friday "the important progress" signified by the U.S. Senate's passing of the immigration reform bill and repeated the need for "a shared vision" on the subject.
The Senate bill "has a comprehensive vision for modifying the regulatory framework of migration," Mexican Foreign Secretary Jose Antonio Meade said.
"Mexico has always hoped for a shared vision on this important matter," Meade said at an event honoring scholarship recipients.
The bill passed by the U.S. Senate on Thursday opens a path to legalization and eventual citizenship for the country's estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, though on condition of increased border security.
The reform bill greatly strengthens border security and also establishes measures to control the future flow of immigrants.
"The reform passed yesterday has the potential to improve living conditions for millions of Mexicans currently residing in the United States," Meade said.
He said that Mexico has expressed its concern, when there was a reason, about U.S. measures that could harm bilateral ties, as when "they abandon the principles of shared responsibility and of being good neighbors."
