Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu has been asked to participate as guest speaker at a gender equality event to be held in New York in September, a Tourism Secretariat (Sectur) press release said Sunday.

The Global Women’s Leadership Initiative head Rangita de Silva sent an invitation to Ruiz Massieu, citing her work as a human rights and gender equality promoter in the Mexican work place.

Ruiz Massieu will be one of the main speakers at the event to be held at Barnard College. She will represent women from Mexico and Latin America, de Silva said.

Ruiz Massieu said that Mexico has taken important steps forward in women’s rights, adding that it “still has a long way to go.”
